Sweet Cinnamon Applesauce
Delicious and makes the house smell divine while it’s cooking!

Sweet Cinnamon Applesauce

Preparation Time: 40 minutes
Total time: 4 Hours, 40 minutes
Fills 2-3 canning jars

8 – 12 Apples, any type!,
1 cup Water,
1/2 a Lemon,
1 teaspoon Cinnamon.

Combine the water and lemon juice in the crockpot.
Core, peel and slice the apples, then mix into the lemon water. Peeling the apples are optional – if you leave them on, it will add colour and texture!.
Add the cinnamon, and mix until the apples are well covered.
Cook on LOW for 4 hours, stir once an hour.
When cooking is finished, mash or puree for a smoother blend..

I have a relatively bad habit of buying a bag of apples and then forgetting to eat them. Thankfully, you can always find excellent uses for them on Pinterest!

Now, why I never thought of making my own applesauce, I have no clue. I absolutely loved it as a child; if I wasn’t eating it on its own, I smothered almost everything with it, even mixing it with plain spaghetti! Yeah, I was a strange child.

Haven’t really changed much, now that I reflect.

I found myself with a large bag of apples this weekend and a craving for something sweet to enjoy. I also wanted to start using my crockpot again, and low, I had the brilliant remembrance of seeing a recipe for Crockpot Applesauce. I decided I wanted to add a little kick to it, so borrowed a suggestion from a second pinner and added a teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the above recipe.

Oct 24_2 Also, I don’t care HOW amazing you are in the kitchen, you CANNOT peel 8-12 apples in 10 minutes if you are doing it by hand, solo. So MY version of the recipe (as above) includes the ACTUAL amount of prep time it took. Because when I’m looking for a recipe, I kinda NEED A REAL ESTIMATION. So there’s that. Knife cuts are also not super important since it’s being cooked down to pulp and then mashed, but it will reduce more quickly if the slices are thinner. Cut accordingly.

Oct 24_3I figured once everything was into the pot it would be annoying to come back every hour just to stir stuff around, but total cook time is 4 hours and you can get anything else done you might need to during that time (laundry, cleaning, blogging….) so it was super simple to set a timer and come stir once or twice around the pot, scrape the sides, etc.

Oct 24_4 Once the final timer went off, I snagged my Potato Masher and went to town by hand. I haven’t yet pulled the trigger on getting a food processor so I couldn’t get it perfectly smooth.

It makes absolutely no difference – the apples are cooked so perfectly that they all but melt in your mouth, so you don’t really “chew” through this perfection. It’s amazing on its own, both warm up or straight from the fridge and can be used as fruit compote on toast (though it’s a little liquid to be spread too thickly). It is AMAZING over a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream. I’m certainly not going to take bets on how long this stuff is going to last, more likely I’ll need to remind myself that I need to eat solid food once and a while!

Thoughtful Tuesday – October 21, 2014

Oct 15_02Got a second? See that sliding scale just to the right of the top of this post? That’s a link to my Extra Life page. If you have a moment, and the ability, I would sincerely appreciate you making a donation. This year, I’m supporting BC Children’s Hospital by playing video games for 24 hours. Any little bit helps, I’ll wait.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

At work last week, we decided that as a studio we are going to take part in Extra Life. This will be my 5th Extra Life, having having taken part in one way or another since 2010. While I was working on the CNE announcement blog, I was reminded of the details surrounding the creation of Extra Life. Even five years later, the desire to honour a young life tragically cut short by a childhood illness punched me right in the feels all over again. While I have never been a member of the Sarcastic Gamers community, I remember the news of Victoria’s passing rippling across social media and effectively, throughout the gaming community as a whole at the time.

With the state of the wider gaming community at this time, I’ve struggled with seemingly endless feelings frustration, anger and disgust. For the better part of 10 years, I and other women and men in the gaming community and industry have tried to lead by example, to encourage our fellow gamers to come to the understanding that united, we are a force for positive change in society. In multiplayer games, you must work together as a coherent team in order to achieve your objective be it to capture a flag, unlock new content or bring down a raid boss. Extra Life, Child’s Play and other events like these are perfect encapsulations of how we can take what we do for “fun” and make it go a whole lot father.

Mark Twain’s quote at the start of this blog resonated with me this week as I sat reading the latest nonsense a very small, but extremely vicious vocal minority is attempting to spread. I realized that the best way I can combat the sexism and the hate that I have encountered is to continue upholding my own personal morals in how I act online when I game; to lead by example in welcoming those who are new to the world of gaming and encourage them to behave in ways that promote inclusion and a healthy community; to help someone’s life just because I can, for no other benefit.

And so once again I ask – if you have the ability to do so please join me in supporting Extra Life 2014. Help show the wider world that we aren’t a misogynistic, self entitled subculture but instead that the community as a whole are wonderful, self less members of a society which knows no physical boundaries. Checkpoint by checkpoint, we can and will achieve our goals.

Thank you.
