So. Mary already heard this earlier today. But since the rest of you haven’t I thought I’d share!
I, being the good person that I am, helped park rangers rescue a duckling today! Got rather wet in the meantime, but it meant saving a duckling, so hey, why not.
One three day old duckling. Seperated from momma duck. All afternoon. Has evaded capture. All afternoon. It is currently starting to darken beneath the canopy of 300+ year old trees that line the valley of the Calano (not the right spelling, will edit later) valley. Because this is a wild duckling, if the momma smells human on the duckling, she will likely abandon it.
Not good news for the duckling.
So this is where I enter the picture. The duckling has been evading the ranger’s net. The rangers are wearing long dress pants. This is their uniform, which they need to wear until the end of the day. They do not have extras. I however, am wearing shorts. Denim, but besides the point. I make the decision to go into the pond, which does not look deeper than thigh-high from the edge, to try and herd the duckling towards the ranger’s net.
What insues after this is a 15 – 20 min session in attempting to pin a three day fuzzy duckling into a corner, and grab him before it makes it’s way down into the larger trout pond. Which is much deeper and has trout in it!! I was SO not going into that one. At any rate. I get in and start herding. Got a little too close to the middle, and found that the water was actually about hip height. Quickly decided that I was NOT going to be rescuing any further than I was already in. Anyway. We eventually got it into a corner and it was scouped up into the net. It traveled over the little waterfall that seperated the two ponds and was placed into the lake where momma was.
The duckling made it’s zigzaggy way across the pond and then straightened out as it zeroed in on mom. Much quacking ensued as duckling rejoined momma and siblings.
And So Goes Chloe’s Good Deed Of The Day.
Oh and Mar, I AM NOT A FREAK!!! I HAD A GOOD REASON TO SPEND TWENTY MINS IN A POND CHASING A DUCKLING!!!
